Amritsar: For the first time since 1984, the Golden Temple has been approved by the Central Government to receive foreign donations. According to a report, sources said the Modi government has allowed the Golden Temple to take foreign donations for the next 5 years. Foreign funding for the Golden Temple was banned after Operation Blue Star.  The SGPC had raised the issue with the Centre several times.

According to the report, former SGPC chairman Gurcharan Singh Tohra was the first person to raise the issue and the SGPC raised the issue again in May this year. The issue was raised with Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah in the last two years and there was a demand to open foreign donations for the Golden Temple. This demand was long under consideration. There was no reason to stop the money in the Golden Temple, as he spends money on humanitarian work and is running a free kitchen.

Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal also played a key role in persuading the Union government to open funds. As an institution, SGPC was never a party to the dispute between the Government of India and Sikh terrorist Jarnail Singh Bondarwale. The introduction of foreign donations is a major relief for the SGPC this year as the Golden Temple offering has been affected due to the corona pandemic.
