New Delhi: National Commission for Minorities Chairman Iqbal Singh Lalpura has made a big statement about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has said that PM Modi is a 'better Sikh than most of us'. Lalpura, an IPS officer-turned-BJP leader, also claimed that the government was doing "everything" for Sikhs. Iqbal Singh Lalpura, during an interview, spoke of the need to do more to completely "heal" the wounds of Sikhs. Lalpura, who was deputy inspector general in Punjab Police, was inducted into the BJP parliamentary board in August 2022.

Claiming that the government is doing everything for the Sikhs, Iqbal Singh Lalpura also cited some special initiatives of the Modi government. In these initiatives, he mentioned the opening of the Kartarpur corridor in the year 2019 and then the removal of the name of Sikhs settled abroad from a secret blacklist in the same year. He further said that 'Sikhs have been removed from the black list of foreign nationals. We are providing them with jobs. Modi's government is doing everything. PM Modi is always available for Sikhs. He said, 'We love Sikhs and are ready to do anything for them. Modi had announced that he was withdrawing the agricultural laws on the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev. Modi Ji is a better Sikh than most of us.' Lalpura said that the BJP wants to realize the idea of peaceful coexistence with the Sikhs.

He said the wounds of the militancy era in Punjab were still fresh in the minds of Sikhs, especially those whose family members were either killed or arrested under TADA. He said 'Under this earlier anti-terrorism law, which was in force in Punjab at that time, law enforcement agencies were given wide-ranging powers of search, seizure and arrest.' Lalpura said that not much has been done to heal the wounds of the Sikhs who lost their loved ones in the era of terrorism.

He said, 'Around 10,000 Sikhs were killed and 15,000 were arrested during the period of terrorism. The families of 25,000 such people still feel hurt. We need to talk to them and efforts are on for that. Till 1992-93, thousands of people surrendered, but we have not done anything to heal their wounds.'
