New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke on the phone on Tuesday, focusing on the "Russian aggression" against Ukraine and agreeing on the urgency of negotiating a truce as quickly as possible. This was said in a briefing from the French embassy in India on Wednesday, a day after the Modi-Macron discussions.

The two leaders emphasized the necessity of unrestricted humanitarian access and agreed to maintain tight coordination on the crisis, including at the UN Security Council, according to the statement.

The "tragic" murder of an Indian student in shelling in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on Tuesday was also discussed.

According to the readout, "the conversation centered on Russia's aggression against Ukraine, in particular the topic of the impact on the civilian population at a time when a young Indian person unfortunately died in Kharkiv as a result of the shelling." President Macron is one of the few European leaders who has been actively involved in diplomacy to calm the Ukraine situation.

The French Republic President  and the Indian prime Minsiter agreed on the significance of reaching a ceasefire as soon as possible, ensuring unhindered humanitarian access, and maintaining close coordination, particularly at the UNSE," the French embassy said.

According to an Indian statement released late Tuesday, the two leaders reviewed the current situation in Ukraine and expressed their concerns about the country's deteriorating humanitarian situation. According to the report, Modi underlined India's long-standing call for an end to hostilities and a return to discussion and diplomacy. "He emphasized India's position that the present world order is underpinned by respect for international law, the UN Charter, and the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all governments," the statement said.

According to the statement, Prime Minister Poroshenko welcomed the talks between Ukraine and Russia and emphasized the necessity of preserving open and unhindered humanitarian access as well as free and unhindered movement of all individuals.
