Mumbai: Mumbai's Byculla Zoo is spending more on taking care of penguins and now there is a controversy over the same expenses. In fact, Congress has recently taken a dig at the decision to float a tender worth Rs 15 crore to look after 7 penguins for three years. There are reports that a contract of Rs 11.5 crore was awarded for 3 years of maintenance of penguins in September 2018 which expires this month. A new tender has now been floated for Rs.15 crores. The zoo administration says the tender has increased by 5-10% due to increase in prices of food-like facilities.

On the other hand, Ravi Raja, leader of the Opposition in the BMC, says, "The BMC is spending more on it than hospitals. Such high maintenance is not fair. The BMC should review the cost of maintenance. The BMC was to develop the maintenance capacity in 5 years. On the other hand, defending the maintenance needs of penguins, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said, "There has been politics on this issue in the past. '

He further said, "Penguins have become a unique identity of Mumbai and the highlight of the zoo. These expenses relate to the maintenance of an enclosure with a fixed temperature. At the same time, he said, "The zoo was closed at the time of the epidemic. But soon people will be attracted to them. If there is any unnecessary increase in tender, we will review, but there will be no compromise in the quality of maintenance. Tell all of you that the penguin enclosure is spread over 1,800 square feet. It has water pools, housing areas, air handling units and cooling systems.
