Mumbai: Mumbai's Haffkine Bio Pharma has been allowed to manufacture Covaxins of Bharat Biotech by the Central government. Now, the manufacture of vaccines in India can gain momentum. In fact, it has mili approved by the Centre last Thursday. The Haffkine Institute, a biomedical company owned by the Maharashtra government, had sought permission from the Centre for technology transfer from Bharat Biotech. In fact, the vaccine was developed in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research from Technology Transfer. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had spoken about the issue at a video conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March.
In fact, he had appealed to PM Modi to give permission to the state-owned pharma company to manufacture the vaccine. Haffkine Pharma had in January sought permission from ICMR for technology transfer which has now been received. Recently, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope had said, "Haffkine is one of the oldest and most prominent biomedical research facilities in the country. There are all the necessary facilities for the production of vaccines.''
He also said that India biotech is producing Covaxin. If the company gives its formula, the Maharashtra government is ready to make the vaccine at the Haffkine Institute, which has all the necessary facilities. The decision will provide vaccines to more people in a short span of time.
