Mumbai: The fire that erupted in a mall in South Mumbai, Maharashtra since Friday, has been doused by Sunday morning. However, cooling operations are still ongoing. The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) said the fire at the City Center Mall could be extinguished 56 hours after the fire. A fire official reported that, "Since many shops in the mall had many combustible items, such as mobile phone batteries, chargers and wires."
A fire broke out in a shop on the second floor of the mall in Nagpada area as level 1 (small fire) at 8.53 pm on Thursday afternoon. The fire soon spread to other floors and engulfed the entire mall. On Saturday, an MFB official said that more than 250 firefighters and 228 tankers were deployed to contain the fire. The mall is spread over a large area with around 400 shops all around.
The official said that one of the main problems that we faced was that the flames were falling from the roof, that is why we are not able to move forward due to restrictions to reduce the explosion. The Mumbai Fire Brigade has declared it a Level 5 fire, in which about 2000 crore rupees of material was burnt.
