Mumbai: The Mumbai Police has arrested a murder accused after 20 years. The criminal was on the run in a murder case committed in 2003. Mumbai Police conducted raids in Bihar several times in two decades, but the culprit could not be found. For the last 20 years, not only the Santacruz police of Mumbai, but the entire western region police were looking for the culprit.

According to the news received, the murder took place in the year 2003 at The Nest Hotel in Vile Parle. Police say that criminal Rupesh Rai had stabbed a man named Deepak Rathod to death in the hotel room. They both came from Delhi. The deceased Deepak had come to Mumbai in connection with the clothing business. Rupesh also accompanied him. Rupesh Rai was 20 years old when he was murdered, now he is 43 years old. After the incident in 2003, a case of murder was registered at Santacruz police station. In this case, Commissioner Satyanarayan Chaudhary said that the culprit had changed his name. He was living among the people by the name of Atul Kedia. He had obtained an Aadhaar card issued from Jharkhand and had also applied for a passport.

The commissioner said that when Rupesh Rai and Deepak Rathod were having dinner in the hotel room, there was an argument between the two about something. In the meantime, Rai, in a fit of rage, picked up the knife and attacked Deepak. Deepak Rathod wanted to start a clothing business in Mumbai, he came to Mumbai for that. After killing Deepak, Rupesh Rai took out Rs 1.30 lakh from his bag and fled. Since then he had been living with different names and identities. Many investigating officers searched for him for years. Deepak, a resident of Muzaffarpur in Bihar, was raided there about 16 times by the police, but the culprit was not found.

Police arrested Rai from a sweet mart in Thane after 20 years. Over the years, the criminal was in touch with his relatives in Bihar. He has a case against him under the Arms Act before 2001 in Delhi. After changing the name, he took up jobs in Gujarat, Goa, Ranchi, Pune and Bhayander. In the last few years, the police team could not catch him because he lived in remote villages where it is difficult to get a mobile range. The teams kept tracing him through informers. The criminal Rupesh had contact with Deepak due to driving training. The accused, Rupesh, has been remanded in police custody till June 6.
