PANAJI: President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the necessity of cultivating high-level proficiency in fields like artificial intelligence (AI) and data science within higher educational institutions in the country.

Speaking at the 34th convocation of Goa University, held at Raj Bhavan, she underlined that the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020 was designed to integrate skill development, industry engagement, and employability to promote a comprehensive education framework.

President Murmu highlighted that education is a lifelong journey, and a significant attribute that can propel students towards success is the tenacity to persist despite challenges. Joining her at the event were dignitaries including Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

President Murmu emphasized, "It is crucial to establish world-class proficiency in areas such as artificial intelligence and data science within our higher educational institutions." She expressed her belief that the present youth generation would contribute to India's advancement during this "sankalp kaal" (period of determination).

In alignment with the NEP 2020, President Murmu assured that necessary measures are being implemented to provide top-notch education. She remarked, "The NEP 2020 aims to amalgamate skill development, industry engagement, and employability, fostering a holistic educational environment."

Recognizing the pivotal role of technology and innovation in today's global landscape, President Murmu commended Goa University for its promotion of innovative practices. She personally awarded degrees to students who successfully completed their undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Goa University.

Addressing the students, President Murmu underscored the significance of convocation as a milestone moment. She acknowledged that the degrees they've attained can open doors to employment and entrepreneurship, but stressed that the attribute to persevere through challenges is what truly propels them forward. Education, she emphasized, is an ongoing journey, and those who continue to learn will be equipped to seize opportunities and tackle life's trials.

President Murmu lauded the fact that 55 percent of the graduating students from Goa University were female, and even more encouragingly, 60 percent of the gold medal recipients were also female. She expressed her delight in witnessing the confidence and progress of female students.

Moreover, President Murmu noted the collaboration between Goa University and the state government's Directorate of Higher Education for the program titled 'Digital Integrated System for Holistic Teaching and Virtual Orientations'. She appreciated the creation of various interdisciplinary schools within the university's campus, an initiative that aligns with the National Education Policy. She envisaged Goa University's potential to evolve into an exemplary hub for education, research, and innovation.

Governor Pillai, in his address, hailed the NEP as a solution to long-standing issues in the education sector. He also praised Goa University for establishing collaborations with international universities through multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs).

President Murmu's visit to Goa spans three days, starting from Tuesday.
