Nagaland Govt forms parliamentary committee to Discuss Naga Peace Talks

The Nagaland government has formed a parliamentary panel headed by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to consider issues related to the Naga peace talks.

A notification signed by Chief Secretary J Alam reads:- “The parliamentary committee will discuss matters relating to the political issue of the Naga and will play the role of facilitator in the ongoing peace talks between the Indian government and the political groups of the Naga.”

The Nagaland Chief Minister Rio is the committee organizer, Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton and Assembly Opposition Leader TR Zeliang are co-organizers. Neiba Kronu, Minister of Planning and Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, is Member Secretary.

In addition, a central committee of 15 members of the Parliamentary Committee has been formed. This includes members of the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party Bharatiya Janata Party, the opposition Naga Popular Front, and an MP and independent minister.

The center has had separate talks with the larger Naga group, the NSCN (IM), since 1997 and the national Naga political groups – which include seven groups – since 2017.
