The 2015 class of the All Nagaland Ad hoc Teachers Group (ANATG) has been holding a nonviolent protest outside the civil secretariat for the past four days. Ad hoc government teachers in Nagaland who are protesting have started an indefinite hunger strike because the state government has not responded favorably to their demand for immediate service regularization.

The 1166 members of the ANATG have been participating in the protest since Monday, according to the group's spokesperson, Bendangtemsu Ozukum, who told reporters that neither the state government nor the department of school education have responded favorably to their demand.

The emergency general meeting of the ANATG-2015 Batch decided to switch the mode of agitation to a hunger strike, he said. "We have patiently and peacefully protested for four days, but with no sign of positive response from the government," he said.

The commissioner and secretary of school education were contacted by the All Nagaland School Teachers Association (ANSTA) on Thursday, but no progress was made, the spokesperson added.

The members of the ANATG-2015 Batch were not illegally appointed, according to the principal director of the directorate of school education, Thavaseelan K, who stated that they were instead appointed irregularly and without following the correct procedures to sanctioned positions.

The government and department are unable to assist the teachers who are in a state of protest due to a Supreme Court and High Court rule that prohibits the regularization of any ad hoc appointees. This is not to say that they do not want to.

Ad hoc teachers have also been advised by the department to petition the court to have the order vacated because, absent such a motion, it would not be possible to regularize their employment.
