The Election Commission of India celebrates 75 years of dedicated service to the nation and its people, established on 25th January, 1950 right before the country became a republic. This will be the 15th National Voters day, celebrated annually on 25th January since 2011 to commemorate the establishment of the electoral body. This yearâs National Voters Day is followed after the historic 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the largest democratic exercise in the world.
The event celebrates the voters of the country. The total electorate count of the country will soon be 100 crores, with its current electoral database at 99.1 crore and counting. We have 21.7 crore young voters in the country (aged 18-29).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the body for its efforts in direction of empowering people exercise their voting rights. In a post on X, Modi shared, âNational Voters Day is about celebrating our vibrant democracy and empowering every citizen to exercise their right to vote. It highlights the importance of participating in the nationâs future. We laud the ECI for their exemplary efforts in this regard.â The Prime Minister also attached a clip of his latest âMann ki baatâ address where he praised the ECI which faced criticism from the opposition. During the address, Modi also applauded the Election Commission for modernizing the polling process with the use of technology to strengthen people with their rights.
This yearâs theme of the National Voters Day is: âNothing like Voting, I Vote for sure.â The theme emphasizes the importance of the participation in the electoral process and encourages the voters to take pride in the franchise.
The National Voters Day aims to underline the importance of being a âVoterâ. It is meant to raise awareness among the citizens about their right and encourage them for an active participation in the democratic electoral process. The day also promotes the addition of new voters, particularly the youth of the nation.
A national function will be held in New Delhi with the President of India Draupadi Murmu as its Chief Guest. Along with the presence of the Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal and the event led by the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioners of India. The President will also present Best Electoral Practices Awards. Prior to this, a two-day conference hosted by ECI on 23-24 January, 2025. The ECI table book âIndia votes 2024: A saga of Democracyâ and the publication âBelief in the Ballot: Human stories shaping Indiaâs 2024 electionsâ will also be presented by the President.
