National Youth day: Know its history and significance with 2025 theme

On this day, January 12 we celebrate the National Youth day to celebrate the youth of the country. It marks an occasion to honor the potential of the young brigade. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, the great Indian philosopher, spiritual leader and an icon for the youth. It not only celebrates the youth but even empowers them, encouraging to work for the progress and betterment of the nation.

History of the day

In the year 1984, the Indian Government declared to celebrate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda as National Youth day. The spiritual leader was an inspiration, great thinker and an influential figure in the 19th century India. He believed in the power of the youth of the country. Thus, since 1985 the country annually celebrates National Youth day.

Significance of the day

The day celebrates the principles and virtues of Swami Vivekananda who considered the youth a driving force behind the transformation of future of India. Many events, programmes and functions are organized in schools and colleges across India to commemorate the day reflecting upon the teachings of Vivekananda and his wisdom. Along with this, an emphasis is laid upon inculcating the qualities of self-discipline, responsibility and spiritual growth among the youth. Also, to adopt what Vivekananda preached.  

Celebrations

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is going to interact with nearly 3000 young leaders on the occasion of National Youth day 2025 at the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders dialogue. It will be held at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. In this initiative, the youth will have the opportunity to share their ideas, expressions and thinking about the challenges India is facing today. It will also engage 1 lakh youth in politics. There will be competitions, cultural presentations and activities which will begin by today itself. the 3000 individuals have been selected after the Viksit Bharat challenge. The only aim of this dialogue is to ‘empower the yuva Shakti.’

Theme 2025

This year’s National Youth day is celebrated with the theme of-

“Youth for a sustainable future: Shaping the nation with resilience and responsibility.”

With this, we have only one thought for India by Swami Vivekananda that says, “Arise, awake and stop not until the goal is reached.” Vivekananda would have only wanted the youth to stay disciplined and perform their duty determined towards the nation. So, stand up young India and fulfill all your duties that take the nation forward.
