CHENNAI: The National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) has emerged as a prominent topic in Tami Nadu's urban local body elections, which will be held on February 19 after a ten-year hiatus.
Governor R.N. Ravi's return of the bill moved by the Tamil Nadu parliament in September 2021 last week sparked a new issue, which is now taking centre stage in the urban local body elections.
The NEET was created, according to the AIADMK, under the Congress-led UPA rule, in which the DMK was a constituent partner. O. Panneerselvam and K. Palaniswami, AIADMK leaders and former Chief Ministers, replied that the DMK was not implementing what it preached, and that the ruling party had backed the NEET law in Parliament when the UPA administration proposed it.
In response to the allegation, Stalin stated that the NEET exam was never held in Tamil Nadu during the previous DMK government, and that it was only after Palaniswami became Chief Minister that the exam was held. The BJP has also made NEET a key election topic, claiming that it was because of NEET that some students from low-income families were able to gain admission to government medical institutes in Tamil Nadu.
