CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) has announced that 218 of the state's urban local body candidates were elected without opposition.

There were 196 candidates elected to town panchayat seats, 18 candidates elected to municipalities, and four candidates elected to corporations. The elections are set to take place on February 19. According to TNSEC sources, over 60% of the candidates who were voted unopposed belong to the ruling DMK.

The AIADMK had the most candidates win unopposed in the rural local body elections conducted in December 2019. According to the poll panel, there are 57,778 candidates running for 12,607 positions in 21 corporations, 138 municipalities, and 489 town panchayats.

Nominations have been filed in 12,738 wards throughout 21 corporations, 138 municipalities, and 490 town panchayats by a total of 74,416 candidates. According to the State election commision, 2,062 nominations were rejected, while 14,324 nominations were withdrawn.
