The National Payments Corporation of India said that Nepal will be the first country to embrace India's UPI system, which will play a key role in revolutionising the digital economy of the neighbouring country (NPCI).

The services will be provided by NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), NPCI's international branch, in collaboration with Gateway Payments Service (GPS) and Manam Infotech. In Nepal, GPS is the authorised payment system operator. In Nepal, Manam Infotech will implement the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

The partnership will benefit Nepal's greater digital public good by facilitating interoperable real-time person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions. Nepal will be the first country outside of India to embrace UPI as a payments platform, enabling the digitalization of cash transactions and advancing the Nepal Government's and Nepal Rastra Bank's visions and objectives.
