New Goa CM expressed his confidence, ahead of his floor test in the assembly

Panaji: On Wednesday, the new BJP government, led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in Goa will face the floor test to prove its majority in the Assembly. Shortly before the floor test, Sawant expressed confidence that the party has '100 per cent confidence that we will win'. He was quoted as saying as "We have 100 per cent confidence that we will win,". Sawant, who took charge as the Chief Minister of Goa on Tuesday afternoon, said the new government had sought a floor test on Wednesday to prove its strength in the Assembly.

He had said "We are going for the floor test tomorrow. There will two deputy CMs in this government - Vijay Sardesai and Sudin Dhavalikar. And I request all the people to not congratulate me or welcome me with flowers during the 7-day mourning period,”. Sawant will have to prove his majority in the House in a special session called by Governor Mridula Sinha at 11:30 am tomorrow (Wednesday), news agency PTI reported.

 

However, the ruling BJP in the state claims majority with the support of 21 MLAs -12 from the BJP, three each of ally partners Goa Forward Party (GFP) and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and three Independents. The strength of the 40-member House has been reduced to 36 following the death of Parrikar and BJP MLA Francis D'Souza and resignations of two Congress MLAs Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte. Sawant, a two-time MLA from Sankhalim in North Goa, was chosen as the successor of late Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who passed away on Sunday evening. He took oath as the Chief Minister of Goa at a swearing-in ceremony held at Raj Bhavan at 2 am on Tuesday. Along with him, Goa Forward Party’s Vijai Sardesai and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP)’s Sudin Dhavalikar, also took oath as deputy chief ministers.

Here it is to be noted that the Congress, which is the single largest party in the coastal state with 14 MLAs, staked claim to form a government in the state. The party also questioned the Governor for not inviting them to form the government despite it being the single largest party in the state.
