On Monday, the Bihar government passed a phenomenal reform for the state’s public. The bill related to liquor ban is passed in the Bihar Assembly where the Chief Minister of the state, Nitish Kumar claimed that the ban that was imposed from 1st April 2016 onward was majorly for the poor people.

“Liquor ban was introduced for the poor people. they were wasting a major part of their income in buying alcohol. Domestic violence was high. I did this for betterment of poor,”

Notably, the move related to liquor ban was taken to accomplish the promises that the CM has made during the polls in Bihar.

On 1st April 2016, the government stopped to grant the licenses for the sale and consumption of alcohol including India Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) in places like hotels, clubs, and bars in towns and cities too in Bihar. Though the ban on country & spiced liquor and India Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) was already imposed on the first phase of the ban.

Reports suggest that the ban have enough potential to cause a huge loss to Bihar economy as the state gets revenue of nearly Rs. 2,000 crores from the sale of IMFL and revenue of around Rs. 4,000 crores from country liquor sales (in 2015-16). As per this report, the move will cause an annual revenue loss of Rs. 5,000 to Bihar.
