Christchurch: Six  people were killed and several injured on Friday after a gunman opened fire at a crowded mosque during afternoon prayers in the city of Christchurch. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern condemned the shooting and declared it as the darkest day.

According to the Media reports, at least 20 shots were fired and nearly 50 people have been injured.

The Bangladesh cricket team was present at the Hagley Park mosque when the incident took place. Cricketer Tamim Iqbal Khan took to Twitter and said, "Entire team got saved from active shooters!!! Frightening experience and please keep us in your prayers #christchurchMosqueAttack"

"A serious and evolving situation is occurring in Christchurch with an active shooter," police said in a statement. Police have taken a suspect in the custody. They have also warned people to avoid the area and all schools and a hospital were put in lockdown.

One witness told stuff.co.nz he was praying in the Deans Ave mosque when he heard shooting and saw his wife lying dead on the footpath outside when he fled.
