New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon welcomed Indian President Droupadi Murmu for a crucial meeting focused on cultural connections, regional stability, and global security concerns.
President Murmu, currently on a multi-country tour, arrived in New Zealand on Wednesday. During her visit, she and Prime Minister Luxon discussed various topics, including enhancing cultural ties and ensuring regional and global security.
"Prime Minister Christopher Luxon met with President Droupadi Murmu to address a range of topics, from strengthening cultural bonds to our mutual commitment to security," President Murmu shared in a post on X.
Earlier in the visit, New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, also met with President Murmu. The discussions underscored the ongoing progress in bilateral relations and explored new avenues for cooperation.
A highlight of the visit was a joint ceremony where both leaders laid a wreath at the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington, paying tribute to those who served.
New Zealand's Governor-General, Dame Cindy Kiro, warmly greeted President Murmu with a traditional Maori "Powhiri" ceremony and a Guard of Honour.
In a special briefing, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that India and New Zealand are poised to sign a new agreement on customs procedures aimed at boosting trade. MEA Secretary East, Jaideep Mazumdar, emphasized that the agreement will support the export of fruits and vegetables between the two nations.
"This visit includes the signing of an agreement on customs procedures to facilitate trade and assist farmers in exporting fruits and vegetables," Secretary East said during the briefing.
Throughout her State visit, President Murmu will meet with Prime Minister Luxon, address an education conference, and engage with the Indian community and supporters of India in New Zealand, according to the MEA.
Prior to New Zealand, President Murmu visited Fiji, where she was honored with Fiji's highest civilian award, 'Companion of the Order of Fiji,' a recognition she described as a testament to the strong friendship between the two countries.
President Murmu departed New Delhi on Sunday for her six-day tour, which also includes visits to Timor-Leste. She will continue her tour with engagements in Timor-Leste on August 10, following an invitation from Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta.
