New Delhi: News agency PTI has approached the Delhi High Court against new rules relating to digital and social media platforms issued by the central government. Hearing the petition, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Central government seeking its response. The next hearing on the case will be held on August 20 along with other petitions. The Delhi High Court has refused interim relief to digital news portals.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed the demand for interim relief from digital media, news portals after hearing petitions already filed in the case. In fact, many websites such as online media The Wire, Quint and Alt News had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court in view of the notice issued by the Centre for complying with new IT rules and the government's direction to take action for not following the rules. The petitions said they have been issued a fresh notice by the Central Government to comply with the new IT rules, warning them to take strict action against them for not doing so.

During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma told the court that about 1200 digital media houses, including independent publishers, have followed the new IT rules. The petitioner's counsel argued in the court that we have challenged the new IT rules, not them. It further said that the central government is trying to control the media under the guise of the apex court order. It's not worth accepting. The court rejected the petitioners' demand for interim relief and adjourned the hearing of the case to August 20.
