Mumbai: The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) informed that the technical bids for the construction of a 21-km tunnel, 7 kilometer of which will be under the sea were opened.

Afcons Infrastructure Limited and Larsen & Toubro Limited each submitted a bid for the C-2 package connecting Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex and Shilphata in the Thane area.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train has been referred to as an Indian "dream project" by the Bombay High Court. The Maharashtra government and NHSRCL began the purchase process in Mumbai's Vikhroli area for the project, and Godrej & Boyce business filed a case to stop it. The court dismissed the motion, stating that the ambitious railway project is of "national importance" and "public interest."

The court stated, "In our view, the bullet train project is an infrastructure project of national importance. A significant portion of the people would benefit and would have saved other benefits for the betterment of this country." About 21 km of the 508.17 km of rail between Mumbai and Ahmedabad are expected to be underground. The property near Vikhroli is where one of the tunnel's entrances is located (owned by Godrej).

Since 2019, the government and the corporation have been involved in a legal battle over the government's decision to purchase corporate-owned land in Mumbai's Vikhroli area for the bullet train project. The 264 crore in compensation that was granted to the corporation in October of last year has already been deposited, the state government previously informed the court.

The Maharashtra government's ruling of September 15, 2022, providing compensation to Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Co Ltd for land acquisition for the bullet train project was challenged by the company in a petition. It had described the state government's land acquisition efforts as "illegal" and asserted that they contained "multiple and blatant illegalities." The HC bench, however, stated that it had not discovered any impropriety in the authorities' compensation or the actions taken.

The first bullet train project in India between Ahmedabad and Mumbai was unveiled in 2017 by the country's prime minister, Narendra Modi, and his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe.

At its top speed of 350 km/h, the bullet train will travel the 508 km distance in less than three hours. India would receive an 88,000 crore loan from Japan for the project with a low-interest rate of 0.1%. The mega project should be finished by 2026.
