Kenneth Petty, Nicki Minaj's husband, pled guilty in federal court to failing to register as a sex offender in California. Petty was arrested in March 2020 and initially pleaded not guilty to the accusation. Petty also agreed to a plea agreement in August 2021, according to records, and formally entered the guilty plea Wednesday (September 9). On Monday, January 24, 2022, he is due to be sentenced.

Kenneth Petty's lawyer, Michael Goldstein, refused to respond when reached by Pitchfork. Nicki Minaj's representatives have also been contacted by Pitchfork. Kenneth Petty went to California in July 2019 but did not register as a sex offender within five working days, according to the federal indictment. According to the New York State Sex Offender Registry, an offender must inform the Division of Criminal Justice Services of any change of address within 10 days.

In 1995, Petty was found guilty of first-degree attempted rape in New York; he was 16 at the time of the incident and served time in jail. A woman recently sued Petty and Nicki Minaj, alleging that Petty attempted to attack her in 1995. According to TMZ, Petty is suing the State of New York and its Criminal Justice Services division to try to have his name removed from the sex offender registry.
