The Mayor's Cup Indore International Chess has now reached its final stage, and due to two major upsets in the ninth round, this title has been decided for the first time in the name of an Indian player. Russia's Boris Shavchenko scored 6.5 points and Georgia's Levan Pantsulia scored 6 points before the ninth round to join six other Indian players in the title race.

India's 15th seed Nitish Berulkar defeated third seed Boris on the first board in the ninth round and knocked him out of the title race, so now Nitish has a golden opportunity to win the title. On 6.5 points, Aronyak Ghosh and Dipan Chakraborty played out a draw against India's Harsh Suresh and Audi Ameya.

But trying to get back on the fourth board, top seed Georgia's Levan Pantsulia caused a big upset by defeating Viyani Antonio of India, and now after 9 rounds, both Nitish and Viyani are very close to the title, scoring 7.5 points each. But with the presence of Harsh, Audi, Deepan, and Aronyak, it has been decided to give the title to an Indian.
