New Delhi: On the crime against Christians, Congress MP Vincent H Pala asked a question in the Lok Sabha. He had asked whether according to the National Crime Records Bureau's (NCRB) 2020 report, religious crimes have increased by more than 95 per cent. To this, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai replied to him in writing.

The reply given by Nityanand Rai said that data on crimes against particular communities is not maintained. He said that according to the 7th Schedule of the Constitution, 'Public Order' and 'Police' are state subjects. The maintenance of law and order is primarily the responsibility of the respective state governments. However, the Government of India oversees the internal security and law and order situation in the country. At the same time, it also issues advisories from time to time to maintain peace and order. At the request of the states, the government also deploys the central government, the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to assist the state governments.

At the same time, in order to strengthen law and order, the government runs schemes for the modernization of state police forces. In addition, there is an institutional mechanism for intelligence sharing, so that public order can be effectively run. He said the NCRB data matches the crime data provided by the states and Union Territories. However, separate data on crimes against particular communities is not maintained.
