Gautam Gambhir said that a successful T20 batting coach playing international cricket is not necessary. According to the former India opener, the job of a coach in the shortest format of cricket is to help the players play with a positive mindset. The cricketer-turned-politician said that batting coaches can be appointed for the shortest format of the game. Gambhir said on the Star Sports show Cricket Connected, "Maybe you can only have a different T20 batting coach for that particular format." It is indeed not true that a person who has not played international cricket or who has not played enough cricket, cannot become a successful coach.

Gambhir further said, after all, what coach does in a T20 format. In a short format, the job of the coach is to mentally prepare the players how any shot can be played by any batsman. However, Gambhir believes that being a successful player helps in becoming a better selector. He further said, it is not important that you have played a lot of cricket, you have to be a very successful coach - maybe, it is right for the selector but not for the coach.
