No More Delay: IRCTC's Ticketing System Overhaul to Cut Waiting Times

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is set to revolutionize its ticketing system to significantly cut down waiting times for passengers. The upgrade, already in progress, is expected to be completed by March 2025.

Once fully implemented, passengers will enjoy instant ticket booking without any delay after confirming their purchase. Additionally, IRCTC aims to resolve the common issue where payments are processed but tickets are not issued.

IRCTC Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Jain attributed these issues to the current system's limited capacity. The sheer number of online bookings often overwhelms the system, causing these problems.

Currently, IRCTC has about 30 million users and processes more than 900,000 online ticket bookings daily, including those made by agents. Over 20 million passengers use trains every day.

In 2023, the railways announced plans to boost its ticket issuing capacity from 25,000 to 225,000 per minute and to handle inquiries from 40,000 to 400,000 per minute.

Additionally, IRCTC has partnered with the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) to promote the 'One India - One Ticket' initiative. This collaboration aims to simplify travel for passengers using both Indian Railways and Namo Bharat trains. After booking an IRCTC train e-ticket, users can now add Namo Bharat train tickets for up to eight travelers per booking. The option to book RRTS services will be available on the PNR confirmation page and within the user's booking history.
