Seoul: Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, has reportedly fired his top general and called for intensifying war preparations "in an offensive way," including increasing weapon production and holding more drills, according to state media on Thursday.

The developments happened on Wednesday during a Central Military Commission meeting, according to the Korean Central News Agency, just days after Kim visited several significant arms factories.

The military meeting occurs as Seoul and Washington get ready for significant joint exercises later this month, which the North views as invasion drills and has repeatedly warned could result in "overwhelming" action in retaliation.
Vice Marshal Ri Yong Gil took Pak Su Il's place as chief of the general staff after Kim fired Pak Su Il at the meeting, according to KCNA without providing any additional information.

According to KCNA, the topic of "making full war preparations" including "securing more powerful strike means" to ensure "perfect military readiness for a war" was on the meeting's agenda on Wednesday.

According to the report, Kim demanded that "all munitions industrial establishments push ahead with the mass-production of various weapons and equipment."

To effectively operate the most modern weapons and equipment that had just been deployed, "he also called for actively conducting actual war drills," it was added. Kim came to a "important conclusion on further stepping up the war preparations of the KPA in an offensive way," according to KCNA.

The meeting also covered plans for a sizable parade to commemorate North Korea's 75th anniversary of its founding on September 9. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Korean War, Pyongyang held a sizable military parade last month. According to analysts, this was "the largest, most overt North Korean display of nuclear-capable systems."

Along with the parade, North Korea held a sizable defence expo, where Kim showed the visiting Russian defence minister some of the nation's most cutting-edge weapons, such as ballistic missiles and spy drones.
