Currently, Rohit Sharma serves as the Indian men's cricket team's official captain across all three formats of the sport. After Virat Kohli resigned as T20 captain in 2021 following the completion of the T20 World Cup, the 36-year-old took over. When Virat made the decision to give up the Test captaincy in January 2022, Rohit was appointed as the all-format captain on a full-time basis. In December of same year, he was also awarded the ODI leadership. He still plays for India in ODIs and Tests now, although he hasn't played in T20s since the team's elimination from the T20 World Cup in 2022.

The Indian team will need to look for a new captain after Rohit, who is already 36. Rohit is most likely to continue playing for a few more years. Along with Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Lyer, who have impressed with their leadership abilities in the IPL, Hardik is one among the leading prospects for white-ball leadership. There are many players who have the potential to succeed Rohit as India's captain, but when asked who he would most want to see lead India in the future, former captain and renowned opener Sunil Gavaskar named Shubman Gill and Axar Patel as his top two candidates. The two should be developed as potential future leaders, according to the 73-year-old.

"One is Shubman Gill and the other is Axar Patel (as future captains), because Axar comes in leaps and bounds; he just gets better every match.Giving him the responsibility of vice captain will make them think. So, these are the two candidates in my view," Gavaskar said.

"If there are others, somebody like ishan Kishan, once he cements his place in the team. He can come into the reckoning as well," he added. Ishan, who is yet to make his Test debut for Team India, is the captain of the Jharkhand team and has also captained India's U-19 side in the 2016 U-19 World Cup.
