Noted lawyer Samaraditya Pal dies in Kolkata at 84

KOLKATA: Renowned lawyer of Supreme Court and Calcutta High Court, Samaraditya Pal passed away at Kolcutta hospital on Thursday, March 9, morning. He was 84.

Samaraditya Pal is survived by his wife Justice Ruma Pal (retired), a former judge of the Calcutta High Court. 
In addition to working as a lawyer at the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court, Pal, also known as Bacchu Pal in the legal community, wrote several works on the Indian Constitution and the law, including India's Constitution: Origins and Development and Law Pertaining to Public Service.

He represented Tata Motors Ltd in the well-known legal battle with the West Bengal government over the purchase of land acquisition for small car Nano Project at Singur in Hooghly district.

Once he said that following his wife became the Judge of Calcutta High Court, he removed his chamber to a different areas  from the residence they used to reside on moral and professional grounds.

Veterans of the city's legal community recall how the late solicitor was especially kind to his juniors and frequently gave them the opportunity to present their arguments in critically important cases.

Expressing his condolences, the West Bengal law minister, Malay Ghatak, who is himself a practicing lawyer said that Late Samaraditya Pal was a moving encyclopedia of law and Indian Constitution in the true sense.
