BhubaneswarOdisha witnessed an unrelenting downpour on 2nd August, leading to a significant landslide in the Keonjhar district. As a safety measure, all schools and Anganwadi centers in Keonjhar will remain closed for the day. The impact of the heavy rainfall is also felt in Balagir, Kalahandi, Dhenkanal, and Balasore, where schools will not operate today.

Warnings have been issued for several districts, anticipating extremely heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours. The northern regions of Odisha, along with other districts, are expected to receive substantial precipitation. Fishermen have been alerted to avoid venturing into the sea to ensure their safety.

IMD scientist HR Biswas, sharing details with the media, reiterated the likelihood of extensive rainfall in the mentioned regions. The weather office had previously cautioned fishermen about rough sea conditions, urging them to stay off the waters until Wednesday afternoon.

The depression over the northeastern Bay of Bengal has moved north-northwestwards at a speed of 25 kmph, intensifying into a deep depression. The current position is approximately 160 km east-southeast of Khepupara in Bangladesh and 420 km east of Digha in West Bengal, as stated in the IMD bulletin.

The forecast suggests that the system will continue moving northwestwards and is expected to cross the Bangladesh coast east of Khepupara by Tuesday evening. Subsequently, it will move west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal in the next 24 hours.

Due to the prevailing weather conditions, Odisha has experienced heavy rainfall, with the capital city Bhubaneswar recording a record-breaking 259.2 mm of rain in the last 24 hours until 8.30 am on Tuesday. This marked the highest August rainfall in Bhubaneswar's history, surpassing the previous record set on August 20, 1997, with 254.2 mm of rainfall. U S Dash, a scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, confirmed the historic precipitation.
