BHUBANESWAR: Police in Odisha said a 54-year-old man was detained on Monday for duping several women throughout the country after marrying them.

Ramesh Chandra Swain a.k.a Bidhu Prakash Swain a.k.a Ramani Ranjan Swain, an inhabitant of Odisha's Kendrapara district, has been identified.

Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash told reporters that the man was detained from a leased property in Bhubaneswar on the basis of a complaint lodged by a woman school teacher from New Delhi at Mahila Thana here in July last year.

Swain married the woman in 2018 in Delhi Arya Samaj while acting as a 'deputy director general' level employee in the Union Health Ministry. After learning that the accused had defrauded her, the teacher filed a complaint, according to Dash.

Swain had married at least 14 women under the guise of a 'deputy director general,' according to the police inquiry. Through matrimonial websites, he used to make contact with the victims.

Swain used to target middle-aged single ladies yearning for companionship and then dump them after he had their money. The victims include lawyers, teachers, doctors, and highly educated women, the majority of whom are from outside of Odisha, according to the police officer.
