Odisha urban polls: Over 6,400 candidates in fray

After 641 persons withdrew their nominations on the last day of the process on Monday, the State Election Commission (SEC) declared that 6,411 candidates remain in the race for the elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Odisha planned for March 24.

On March 24, voters will be polled for 109 civic bodies, including three municipal corporations. Following the withdrawal of nomination papers, 569 candidates are running for chairperson or mayor, while 5,842 candidates are running for councillor or corporator, according to the SEC.

According to the election commission, 102 candidates withdrew their bids for the positions of chairperson and mayor, while 539 persons opted out of the polls for councillor and corporator.

The election commission has instructed district magistrates and cum collectors to ensure that the continuing campaigning for the March 22 municipal elections ceases at 5 p.m., 48 hours before the polls. No one may convene, hold, or attend any public assembly in any polling area during the 48-hour period before voting, according to the rules.

In a letter to all district collectors, SEC Secretary RN Sahu stated that public meetings and campaigning in whatever form should be ended by 5 p.m. on March 22.
