BENGALURU: Karnataka police detained the son of an astrologer on Sunday in connection with a case of blackmailing a state cabinet minister over his son's "private video" and demanding Rs 1 crore in extortion money. Rahul Bhat has been recognised as the person who was detained.

The accused sent a video to Minister for Cooperation, S.T. Somashekar's cellphone in the latter week of December 2021, according to CCB detectives investigating the matter.

His son was featured in the video. The accused demanded a ranson of  Rs 1 crore from the minister to stay quiet. Minister Somashekar had reported the incident to the police, and his son Nishanth had filed a complaint in the matter.

After conducting an investigation, the police detained Rahul Bhat and held him in custody for five days before presenting him to the court. The video was received from the cellphone of Indi constituency Congress MLA Yashwanth Rao Patil's daughter, according to the probe.

MLA Patil told the police that his daughter is currently in the United States and that she gave a SIM card to one of her friends before leaving the country. The police have now obtained her friend's information and have began a search for him. More research is being carried out.
