'One District One Product' ODOP a game changer for the North East Indian economy

The Union government has announced an aspirational One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, focusing to boost the economy of the region, district by district by encouraging indigenous and specialised products of that particular district. The Northeast has always been a agrarian economy with immense potential for agriculture and the people always prefer sustainable thinking and planning, and community involvement as a pre-condition for development-based initiatives.

The tribes and sub-tribes of this land, possess a vigorous craft tradition and almost every tribe in the region excels in craftmanship. In spite of quality spices, herbs, vegetables and fruits production, the region lacks institutional support from the government at the local level. connectivity, logistics, storage, connect to buyers worldwide and training are the hindering factors of the economic growth in the region for a long time. The ODOP programme pushes traditional industries to work alongside the local communities and authorizing the citizens through the Make in India campaign. ODOP aims to promote local indigenous specialised products and the crafts of each district through various development initiatives, which includes providing loans to local production units, artisans, and farmers; establishing common facility centres; helping market these products at a global level; and facilitating these traditional craft and art forms to gain an international market and be preserved for the next generations.

These steps will increase income and local employment. And empowers the craftsmen, artisans, and farmers to improve their product quality and attain newer skills to produce better products. ODOP will be a game changer in Northeast India if implemented well. ODOP initiative to bridge the gap between the Northeast and the rest of the country meanwhile formulating a sustainable development model in the region. Invest India, the Government’s investment promotion and facilitation agency has already been entrusted with implementing the ODOP programme at the ground level and it has already started connecting with stake-holders from various indigenous industries in the region, handholding them towards making their product global.
