THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The protesting BJP and the Congress intensified their calls for Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Mayor Arya Rajendran to resign on Tuesday.
Like Monday, BJP council members showed up early, took their positions in front of Rajendran's office, and began shouting slogans for her resignation after she allegedly addressed a letter to the party's district secretary claiming that there were 295 temporary openings in the corporation.
However, the Crime Branch police decided to look into this situation after Rajendran categorically denied ever drafting such a letter.
The Congress workers blocked the official car that belonged to Rajendran. She was eventually able to drive to her office when the police took action.
After reaching the office complex, amid strict security, she was whisked to her office through a different locations and when the BJP councilors learnt about it, they hooted at her.
Ashok Kumar, the corporation's senior-most councillor and a seasoned BJP politician, expressed regret that she had engaged in such dishonest behaviour when he was seated before the mayor's office. He promised that they would keep protesting until she steps down.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the investigation team is proceeding cautiously because there are concerns that the factionalism within the CPI-M in the state capital district is the cause of the entire letter controversy and because any thorough investigation could put some of the party's top district level leaders in a precarious position.
The Mayor has publicly said that she did not write such a letter, never reported anything to the police, and instead met with Vijayan and briefed him. Later, Vijayan requested an investigation from the state's top cop.
Rajendran made history in 2020 when she was elected as the nation's youngest mayor. She was dubbed the nation's youngest "corrupt" mayor by the BJP and the Congress.
Now that the Vijayan government has been proclaimed to be at war, all eyes are on Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, who is currently reviewing a thorough memorandum that was signed by the BJP council members regarding many corruptions that have surfaced in the corporation.
Khan has promised the BJP council members that he will review their memo and act appropriately.
