INX case: Chidambaram filed bail plea in Delhi High Court in ED case

New Delhi: Former Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram have filed a petition for bail in the Delhi High Court. Chidambaram has got bail in the CBI case on Tuesday i.e. Tuesday on INX Media. He is now seeking bail in the Enforcement Directorate case investigating the same case. He is currently lodged in Tihar Jail under judicial custody of ED till October 24. Chidambaram has said in the bail plea that the arrest of ED has been done with malice and its purpose is to damage the reputation of the petitioner.

The CBI had filed an FIR on 15 May 2017 alleging irregularities in the INX Media Group approval received by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) in 2007 for receiving foreign funds. During that time Chidambaram was the Finance Minister. On October 16, the former Finance Minister P Chidambaram was questioned for nearly two hours by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case involving INX Media. The ED reached Tihar Jail on getting permission from the special court.

Chidambaram was arrested after questioning. The CBI had alleged in the charge sheet that Chidambaram, while the finance minister, got the INX Media approval from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board in 2007 for taking a bribe of Rs 305 crore. Several government officials were also involved in this decision process, one of which may be named in the CBI charge sheet. However, the name of the officer, believed to be close to Indrani Mukherjee and Peter Mukherjee, was not disclosed. Indrani can be a government witness in the CBI charge sheet. Currently, he is in jail for the murder of daughter Sheena Bora. Congress has been continuously accusing the government of trapping its leader.
