New Delhi: Former Finance Minister and Congress veteran P Chidambaram has attacked Defense Minister Rajnath Singh for announcing a ban on import of defense equipment. The Congress leader said that the Defense Minister on Sunday morning said about the 'bang' announcement and his announcement ended with 'whispers'.

P. Chidambaram wrote in tweeting that, 'The ban on any import is really a ban on itself. What the Defense Minister said in his historic Sunday announcement was merely worthy of the office order that the Minister's Secretary would issue. Restriction on import is just jargon. This means that we will try to make a single device in 2 to 4 years (which we import today) and after that we will stop importing. It is noteworthy that Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has said that the Ministry of Defense is now fully ready to grow rapidly on the initiative of self-reliant India.

Rajnath Singh said that the government will ban the import of 101 defense equipment to encourage defense related manufacturing in the country. Banning the import of these defense equipment will create huge opportunities for the Indian defense industry to manufacture weapons.
