Chennai: Noted archaeologist, art historian and Padma Bhushan awardee R Nagaswamy passed away tragically in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, on Sunday. He was 91 years old. Nagaswamy was the first director of the archaeological department of Tamil Nadu. Nagaswamy's son-in-law Bhaskar Kailasam has reported that Nagaswamy has two daughters and two sons in his family. His wife had already passed away.

He said Nagaswamy passed away at his chennai residence around 2.30pm. Nagaswamy was an expert witness in a London court in the famous Pathur Nataraj case and was instrumental in bringing back chola-era bronze Nataraj to Tamil Nadu.
Expressing grief over the death of R Nagaswamy, PM Narendra Modi on Sunday said that future generations will never forget his contribution to popularising the vibrant culture of Tamil Nadu.

PM Modi wrote in his tweet that "Future generations will never forget Thiru R Nagaswamy's contribution in popularizing the vibrant culture of Tamil Nadu. His passion for history, archive and archaeology was remarkable. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti.'
