Islamabad: Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis has said that in the one-day World Cup played in England last year, Pakistan made a mistake of underestimating India's top-order batsmen, which he had to pay by losing the match by a big margin. In the match played on 16 June 2019 at Manchester's Old Trafford ground, India defeated Pakistan by 89 runs by Duckworth Lewis system.

The 48-year-old Waqar told the official Twitter handle of 'Glowfans' that Pakistan felt that it would bowl the Indian top order cheaply by bowling first, which would put Team India under pressure. But India had great batsmen in the top order. He said, 'I think Pakistan's decision to bowl after winning the toss in that match was wrong. Pakistan hoped that the pitch would initially help the fast bowlers and the team would put pressure on India's top order batsmen by sending them to the pavilion early.

Waqar said, 'India had great openers. The pitch and conditions also did not support the fast bowlers and the Indian batsmen did not give the bowlers a chance to dominate. India made such a huge score, which became very difficult for Pakistan to achieve. Let us tell you that in this match, India scored a score of 336 for five in 50 overs on the basis of Rohit Sharma's superb knock of 140 runs in 113 balls, after which Pakistan scored six in 40 overs in this rain-affected match.
