Chennai: K. Palaniswami, the Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu, requested the DMK-led state government on Wednesday to provide yarn and yarn subsidies to weavers so that they can weave free sarees and dhotis during Pongal and to cut the import duty on cotton. Palaniswami also requested that the DMK government eliminate cotton and yarn hoarding in the state.

Palaniswami cited the textile industry's recent spike in yarn costs as an example of how the units were unable to take new orders and also execute existing orders with higher input prices. He said that cotton import tax hikes and hoarding are the key causes of the price hikes that have impacted handloom and powerloom units. Palaniswami stated the Tiruppur Exporters Association is organising a strike and a hunger strike on November 26 to protest the price hike.

He said that powerloom owners are selling their machines to make ends meet.
