Tensions between Ukraine and Russia have risen since Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Ukraine's separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as separate entities on Monday. Following the fall of the Soviet Union, Ukraine gained independence in 1991.

Putin announced on Thursday that special military operations are being initiated in the Donbas region "to defend" the population. He also cautioned other nations that interfering with Russia's actions would result in "consequences." The Indian embassy in Kyiv has previously stated that the current situation in Ukraine is highly unpredictable and that Indian citizens should keep secure following Russian military actions.
