Persistent Fog Blankets North India, Disrupting Transportation; IMD Predicts Extended Duration

New Delhi: Several parts of North India, including Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, continue to grapple with moderate to dense fog on Sunday morning, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather agency anticipates no relief from these conditions until January 4, 2024.

Zero visibility has been recorded in Jorhat (Assam), Pathankot, and Bathinda (Punjab), Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir), and Agra (Uttar Pradesh). Ambala (Haryana) reported visibility at 25 meters, Bikaner (Rajasthan) and Patiala (Punjab) at 50 meters, and Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh), Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh) at 50 meters, Amritsar (Punjab) and Hisar (Haryana) at 200 meters, according to the weather department.

In response to the coldwave conditions, the Indian Railways reported delays for 23 trains due to poor visibility. At the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, visibility stood at 800 meters. IMD highlighted the likelihood of very dense fog conditions (visibility 550 meters) in many parts of Punjab and West Uttar Pradesh during late evening to morning hours from December 31 (Sunday) to January 4 (Thursday). Similar conditions were predicted in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and East Uttar Pradesh until January 1 (Monday).

Uttarakhand may experience dense fog conditions (visibility 50-200 meters) in the early morning hours/morning hours from December 31 (Sunday) to January 4 (Thursday), according to the IMD. Similar conditions were expected in north Madhya Pradesh, north Rajasthan, and Jharkhand on December 31 (Sunday) and January 1 (Monday); Gangetic West Bengal on December 31 (Sunday), and Odisha, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura from December 31 (Monday) to January 2 (Tuesday).

The Met Department added that cold day conditions were expected in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, and isolated pockets of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and north Rajasthan till December 31 (Sunday). A gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C was predicted in many parts of Central India during the next two days, with significant change thereafter.

IMD forecasted a fall by 2-3°C in maximum temperatures over many parts of Central and Northwest India during the next two days, with no significant change in minimum temperatures for the rest of the country.

Regarding the rainfall/snowfall forecast, under the influence of a feeble western disturbance, light isolated rainfall/snowfall was expected in Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad; Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on December 31 (Sunday). Light isolated rainfall was also predicted in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh from January 1-3 due to lower-level easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal. In south India, the IMD forecasted light to moderate rainfall in some places in south Tamil Nadu, south Kerala, and Lakshadweep until January 3 (Wednesday).
