PhonePe, on February 7, launched support for ‘Unified Payments Interface (UPI) international’ payments. The feature will allow Indian users travelling foreign countries to pay foreign merchants using Unified Payments Interface .

The current launch supports local QR codes used by foreign merchant shops in the UAE, Singapore, Mauritius, Nepal, and Bhutan. Similar to how they do with overseas debit cards, users will be able to make payments in foreign currency directly from their Indian bank. The first financial app to introduce this feature in India is PhonePe.

At the merchant's location or in advance of their overseas journey, users can use the PhonePe App to activate their UPI-linked bank account for international travel. To activate the service, the customer must enter their UPI pin into the safe.

"UPI International is the first significant step towards enabling UPI to be experienced by the rest of the world as well. I have no doubt that this launch will totally redefine how Indians who travel abroad pay at merchant establishments abroad. This time is no different, as PhonePe has always taken satisfaction in being the first TPAP to provide new UPI functionalities to the market, according to Rahul Chari, CTO and Co-Founder of PhonePe.

A few weeks ago, PhonePe made news for moving its headquarters from Singapore to India. According to reports, the investors of the Flipkart-owned digital payment company paid Rs 8000 crore in taxes for the company to change its domicile from Singapore to India.

"We must conduct a new market valuation and pay tax on the delta if you choose to relocate to India as your domicile. In order to allow us to return to India, our investors have paid close to Rs 8000 crores in taxes, said Sameer Nigam, co-founder and CEO of PhonePe, during a live YouTube session.
