Durg: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made an announcement in Durg, Chhattisgarh, stating that the government will extend the ongoing ration scheme for the poor for the next 5 years. He expressed gratitude to the public and said, "I have decided that the BJP government will extend the scheme of providing free ration to 80 crore poor people of the country for the next 5 years. Your love and blessings always give me the strength to take sacred decisions."

The scheme to provide free ration to 80 crore people of the country was initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has been extended multiple times. Under the 'Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY),' every individual is entitled to receive 5 kg of food grains free of cost every month. This scheme operates alongside the 'National Food Security Scheme (NFSA),' ensuring that those already receiving grains under NFSA will continue to receive their regular supplies. PMGKAY, which was initially set to conclude in December 2023, is an annual budget package of Rs 1.70 lakh crore. By announcing the extension for 5 more years, PM Modi emphasized his empathy for the impoverished, citing his own experiences with poverty. He said he understands the pain of the poor as he hails from a humble background.

Under this program, every eligible family is provided with 5 kg of wheat or rice and 1 kg of pulses at no cost. Additionally, one kilo of whole gram is also distributed. This scheme is aimed at assisting those living below the poverty line, as well as marginal farmers and individuals with disabilities. The PMGKAY has been praised as a significant government initiative that has substantially benefited the underprivileged. It played a vital role in averting widespread hunger during the severe global pandemic.
