The Ministry of Culture, in association with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), a global Buddhist umbrella organization, is organizing a virtual prayer meeting, in which all the top heads of Buddhist associations around the world will participate. The live streaming of the prayer ceremony to be held on this occasion will be from all the major sites associated with Buddhism. These sites include Lumbini Gardens in Nepal, Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, Moolagandha Kuti Vihar in Sarnath, Parinirvan Stupa in Kushinagar, the sacred and historic Anuradhapura Stupa in Sri Lanka and other popular Buddhist sites.

The virtual event will start at 6.30 am and will run till 7.45 pm. PM Modi's 10-minute keynote address will start at 9 am. Prior to that, Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Patel and Minister of State for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju will participate in the event. Buddha Purnima is considered as Triple Blessed Day i.e. Tathagata Gautama Buddha's birth, attainment of knowledge and Mahaparinirvana day. But at a time when the entire world is locked in homes due to deadly epidemics and forced to work from home, such holy events have also been organized keeping in mind the rules of social distancing.
