NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed immense joy regarding the United Nations General Assembly's resolution to establish a new Memorial Wall in honor of fallen peacekeepers.

"I am delighted that the UN General Assembly has adopted the resolution to create a new Memorial Wall for fallen Peacekeepers, which was spearheaded by India. This resolution garnered an unprecedented 190 co-sponsorships. I am grateful for the support of everyone," he shared on Twitter.

On the previous day, the UN General Assembly unanimously passed a resolution. According to the resolution, the Assembly welcomes the initiative of Member States to construct a memorial wall at the United Nations Headquarters in New York within three years of its adoption. The purpose of this wall is to pay tribute to the memory of peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives.

The resolution further states that the planning, construction, upkeep, and maintenance of the memorial wall will be fully financed through voluntary contributions. The Assembly encourages interested Member States to provide voluntary contributions for this purpose.

It has also been decided that the memorial wall will be prominently featured in solemn ceremonies held on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers and other events related to United Nations peacekeeping.

In September 2015, during the high-level General Assembly week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at the Leaders' Summit on Peacekeeping, which was hosted by then-U.S. President Barack Obama at the UN Headquarters. In his remarks, Prime Minister Modi honoured the peacekeepers who gave their lives in defence of the highest principles of the UN.
