NEW DELHI: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, on his first official visit to India, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. The two leaders held delegation-level discussions, focusing on strengthening the age-old ties between the two countries. Highlighting their historic connection, PM Modi noted that Indonesia was the chief guest at India’s first Republic Day celebration, and now, as India marks 75 years as a Republic, Indonesia is once again part of this memorable occasion.

During their talks, India and Indonesia signed several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to deepen cooperation in areas like Financial Technology (Fintech), Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Digital Public Infrastructure.

President Subianto was given a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday, attended by President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi. His visit signifies an important milestone in the India-Indonesia partnership, as he will serve as the Chief Guest at India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations on Sunday.

Arriving in New Delhi on Thursday evening, President Subianto was warmly welcomed by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita. Speaking after the ceremonial reception, the Indonesian President expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the honor.

I deeply value the incredible honor I received today.... Indonesia regards India as a very close ally.... India was among the first nations to recognize our independence and support our freedom struggle.... We will always remember India’s contributions,” he said.

President Subianto added, “It is an extraordinary honor to be here, and I am even more humbled to serve as the Chief Guest at your Republic Day parade tomorrow. I am committed to fostering stronger cooperation and partnerships between our nations.”

This marks President Subianto’s first state visit to India since he assumed office in October 2024.

Later in the day, the Indonesian President will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at Rajghat, followed by a meeting with PM Modi at Hyderabad House. This session will include the exchange of MoUs and press briefings. He is also scheduled to meet Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar at the Taj Mahal Hotel and have further discussions with President Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

On Friday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met President Subianto and shared the moment on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Delighted to call on President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia at the beginning of his state visit to India. Value his insights and positive outlook for enhancing our multifaceted bilateral ties.”

Before departing for India, President Subianto acknowledged India’s historic role in supporting Indonesia’s independence, stating, “India has always been a vital and friendly nation for Indonesia. During our independence struggle until 1949, India extended medical, financial, and other assistance. We hold India in high regard as a true friend and partner.”

Interestingly, Indonesia’s first President, Sukarno, was the Chief Guest at India’s inaugural Republic Day celebrations in 1950. Continuing this tradition of friendship, Indonesia has sent a 352-member contingent from its National Armed Forces, including a marching band and ceremonial troops, to participate in this year’s festivities.

President Subianto’s visit underscores the strong historical ties and deepening collaboration between the two countries, setting the stage for a future of enhanced bilateral cooperation.
