Moscow: In a recent telephone conversation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in discussions regarding the situation in Ukraine, as well as Russia's successful handling of an armed mercenary mutiny. The Kremlin expressed that PM Modi showed support for the decisive actions taken by the Russian leadership to maintain law and order, ensure stability, and safeguard the security of its citizens in response to the events of June 24.

During the call, the two leaders also reviewed the progress of their bilateral cooperation and exchanged perspectives on regional and global matters of mutual interest. Putin updated PM Modi on the latest developments in Russia, while the Prime Minister reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy in addressing the situation in Ukraine. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has garnered significant international attention, with the Western world expressing concerns and criticisms towards Putin's role in the war.

The conversation also  touched upon the collaboration between India and Russia within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and the G20. The statement emphasized the special attention given to fostering cooperation within these frameworks, particularly in light of India's current presidency of the G20 and the significance of the BRICS format.

The mutiny orchestrated by Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner mercenary group presented a significant challenge to President Putin's leadership, marking one of the most consequential tests during his two-decade rule. Their temporary control over the town of Rostov-on-Don came to an end when Prigozhin ordered his troops to retreat.

Overall, the conversation between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin encompassed a wide range of topics, showcasing the depth of their bilateral cooperation and the importance of addressing regional and global challenges through dialogue and diplomacy.
