NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate a series of key development projects in Delhi on Friday, marking a significant push towards urban transformation. These initiatives include the inauguration of 1,675 new flats for the residents of Jhuggi Jhopri (JJ) clusters, as well as two major urban redevelopment projects in the city.
A part of the government's ongoing slum rehabilitation efforts, the newly constructed flats are located at Swabhiman Apartments in Ashok Vihar, Delhi. PM Modi will visit the site and hand over keys to eligible beneficiaries, fulfilling the vision of the Prime Minister's "Housing for All" initiative. These flats aim to provide a better living environment for JJ cluster residents, with proper amenities and facilities.
For the construction of each flat, the Central government spends around Rs 25 lakh. Beneficiaries only contribute a small portion, with the total amount being less than 7% of the cost. This includes a nominal contribution of Rs 1.42 lakh and a maintenance fee of Rs 30,000 for five years.
In addition to the housing project, Modi will also inaugurate two urban redevelopment projects. The first is the World Trade Centre (WTC) at Nauroji Nagar, which has transformed the area by replacing over 600 dilapidated quarters with state-of-the-art commercial towers. This project offers around 34 lakh square feet of premium commercial space, equipped with modern amenities. Incorporating green building practices, the WTC includes sustainable features such as solar energy generation and rainwater harvesting systems.
The second urban project is the redevelopment of the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) type-II quarters at Sarojini Nagar. The new complex consists of 28 towers, providing over 2,500 residential units with modern amenities. The project also integrates eco-friendly systems like rainwater harvesting, sewage treatment, and solar-powered waste compactors.
PM Modi will also inaugurate an advanced office complex for CBSE in Dwarka, contributing to the city's infrastructure development. Built at a cost of approximately Rs 300 crore, this eco-friendly complex includes offices, an auditorium, an advanced data center, and an efficient water management system. The building adheres to Platinum Rating standards of the Indian Green Building Council, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.
On the same day, the Prime Minister will kick off three new projects at Delhi University by laying their foundation stones. These projects, valued at over Rs 600 crore, include the construction of academic blocks at the Eastern and Western Campuses, and the establishment of Veer Savarkar College at Roshanpura, Najafgarh. The college will feature modern facilities to enhance educational infrastructure in the region.
The inauguration of these projects comes as Delhi prepares for the upcoming assembly elections, expected to be held in February. The BJP, led by PM Modi, is making these announcements in an effort to strengthen its position in the national capital, where it is in political competition with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), currently in power since 2013.
