Dehradun (Uttarakhand): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially inaugurate the 38th edition of the National Games, scheduled to take place from January 28 to February 14 in Uttarakhand. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his gratitude, stating, "We are thankful to PM Modi for agreeing to inaugurate the event. We also requested him to participate in the winter yatra and stay here for a day during the pilgrimage."

In December 2024, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) made an exciting announcement that Uttarakhand would be the official host of the 2025 National Games. This prestigious sporting event, which brings together athletes from across the country to compete in various disciplines, will be a significant milestone for Uttarakhand. This grand event is expected to feature over 10,000 athletes, officials, and coaches, competing in 38 sports across various cities in the state.

The IOA President, PT Usha, emphasized the significance of the 38th National Games, stating, "This event is set to be a milestone in promoting both modern and traditional sports in India." She also highlighted the inclusion of demonstration sports such as kalaripayattu, yogasana, mallakhambh, and rafting, as a way to honor India's rich sporting heritage while providing fresh opportunities for athletes.

The National Games are India's premier multi-sport event, modeled after the Olympics. Athletes from across the country, representing different states and Union Territories, compete for medals in a wide variety of sports. This year’s edition will showcase 32 sporting disciplines along with four demonstration sports.

In the previous edition held in Goa in 2023, Maharashtra topped the medal tally with 228 medals, including 80 golds. The 2022 edition, held in Gujarat, marked the revival of the games after a seven-year gap, with Services emerging as the overall champion.

Uttarakhand's hosting of the National Games is expected to enhance the state's reputation as a prime destination for sports and tourism. The incorporation of traditional sports alongside Olympic disciplines also underscores the event’s cultural diversity and significance.

As preparations begin, the people of Uttarakhand are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to witness this grand event and support the athletes who will represent India in future international competitions.
